Our why is you!

This child passenger safety week: What's our why?

This week we learned why child passenger safety is important to our community partners. As we reflect on the week, and these last 20 years, we asked ourselves, “What’s our why?” as the Maritime wide (sometimes Atlantic wide) child injury prevention program at IWK Health. Our "why" is you and your family.

Injury prevention matters to all of us. When we, our friends, or family are injured, it becomes the most important focus in our lives. Bumps, bruises, and scrapes are a part of childhood; however, serious injury, resulting in death or lifelong disability, is something no child and no family should have to experience. When an injury to a child occurs, the magnitude of its impact is felt at all levels of society. Injuries also place an enormous burden on our health-care system. By working collaboratively and applying a variety of strategies, we can, together, promote a safer community for all to live long, healthy lives

Our mission is to provide evidence-based information to community organizations, governments, and other partners to ensure children are as safe as necessary at home, on the road, and at play. We are committed to reducing the rate and severity of unintentional injuries to children and youth in Atlantic Canada.

With our “why” comes our “how”.  It is to provide evidence-based information to community organizations, governments, and other partners to ensure children are as safe as necessary at home, on the road, and at play. We are committed to reducing the rate and severity of unintentional injuries to children and youth in Atlantic Canada.
