Most children with special needs can use car seats purchased at a regular store. This is your first choice. However, sometimes medical concerns make regular car seats difficult to use. Spina bifida, Pierre robin sequence and very low birth weight can require a special car seat or car bed designed to accommodate a baby with special medical needs.
It is very important to speak with someone at Child Safety Link, or your health care provider, if a regular car seat cannot be used by your child for a medical reason. Please call 1-866-288-1388, extension 1, and leave a message – our Car Seat Safety Specialist will return your call.
When it comes to transporting infants and children with special needs, Transport Canada has published a helpful document that considers alternate safe seating choices for children in these situations.
