Install your Car Seat with a Lap & Shoulder Seat Belt

Check the Car Owner’s Manual to find out how to use a seat belt with an infant car seat in your car.

Put the seat belt through the marked pathway on the infant car seat or base and buckle the seat belt.

Lock the Seat belt

Pull the shoulder belt all the way out. You will hear it click when it reaches the end. Let go of it. As the belt shortens, push down on the infant car seat or base. You can also use your knee to push the base or car seat into the car. At the same time, pull up on the shoulder belt so that it will lock in place as tightly as possible.

If Your Seat Belt Does Not Lock

Not all seat belts lock. When you pull your seat belt all the way out and let it go, it should shorten, but not lengthen again. If it can be pulled out, it does not lock.

If your car’s seat belts do not lock, you will need to use a locking clip to keep the car seat in place.

Or

Some car seats have belt lock offs on the car seat base – check your car seat instructions for how to use your belt lock offs.

Check to see that the car seat or base is tight at the spot that it is anchored to the car. Place your hands on each side of base, and try to move the car seat or base side to side and front to back. The car seat or base should not move more than one inch (2.5 cm) side to side or front to back. If the base moves too much, push down on base harder and pull belt tighter.

For the rear-facing car seats, it is okay to have movement at the top of the seat (where your baby’s head is). This is called rebounding and rear-facing car seats are designed to do this, but the car seat base should not move more than one inch (2.5 cm) where it is anchored to the car.

If you are using a seat belt do not also use the UAS/Latch system.
